John Gooday, the Traffic Controller for Scotland said:
"This is an important investment by the Scottish Executive. It will allow us to provide not only an important service to the travelling public in Scotland, but will also allow changing traffic patterns to be monitored on our roads, providing us with additional valuable intelligence on national traffic conditions. In addition, we anticipate that this service will lead to reduced congestion through individual drivers having better information which will allow them to make informed decisions regarding the route and time of their journey, and hopefully encouraging some to change their mode of transport."
In October 2002 The Scottish Executive signed a five-year contract with ITIS to supply a comprehensive journey time planner and traffic delay information service covering Scotland's roads.
The 'travel predictor' service is available to the public through a Journey Time website accessed via the Scottish Executive traffic information website www.nadics.org.uk . Drivers are able to input their proposed route, including their expected date and time of travel. The 'normal' journey time is given, together with the current predicted journey time, taking into account factors such as road-works and volumes of traffic and delays regularly experienced on particular days and times.
