Floating vehicle data is a process and technology for the collection, analysis and forecasting of journey times using speed and location data directly from a sample of vehicles as an alternative to fixed roadside sensors such as number plate readers. Small scale floating vehicle data trials have been implemented in the past, but until the ITIS FVD® implementation no national road network monitoring via a floating vehicle data approach had been attempted.
